Darren McKenna and Derek Glynn both scored twice as Longford avenged a home defeat to Athlone earlier in the season with an emphatic win at Lissywoollen.

Mckenna charged down Athlone keeper Alex O’Reilly’s attempted clearance for the opening goal on 24 minutes with defender Ray Kenny heading home after Adrian Murphy flicked on Michael Foley’s corner to double the lead three minutes later.

Stephen Gough hit a post with a 33rd minute penalty, but a third Longford goal did arrive on the blow of the break when Glynn raced clear to round O’Reilly and score.

Mark Salmon got a goal back for Athlone on 50 minutes when tapping home after a goalmouth melee.

Within two minutes Athlone scored again when Austin Skelly shot home a penalty after he’d been fouled by Gough.

But that was as good as Athlone’s comeback got as Longford scored twice inside as many minutes to seal their win.

Glynn got his second of the night on 72 minutes while McKenna then added a fifth, and his second, when getting past defender Kevin Dunne to fire past O’Reilly.
