Shelbourne 1-0 Sporting Fingal
Friday, 17 July 2009 21:47
Richie Baker hit the winner as fellow veteran Dean Delaney saved a penalty to make it eight wins on the bounce for Shelbourne in the top-of-the-table derby clash at Tolka Park.

The victory keeps Dermot Keely’s Reds four points clear at the top of the First Division table.

Defeat, their second in three games, is a significant blow to Sporting’s outright promotion hopes as they drop to third and now trail Shels by seven points with their near neighbours having a game in hand.

Both goalkeepers excelled to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Shels’ Delaney was first into action after just four minutes when choosing to dive the right way to stop Conan Byrne’s penalty after the Fingal winger had been taken down by the home keeper.

But Darren Quigley, at the other end, made two brilliant stops to deny Anto Flood.

First, on 12 minutes, the Fingal keeper got down smartly to save as Flood tried to shoot by him after finding himself through on goal.

A minute before the break, Flood was in again from Colin O’Brien’s sublime pass only for Quigley to make a superb save with his feet.

Shels finally broke Fingal’s resolve two minutes into the second half when Baker’s left wing free-kick deceived everyone in a crowded box to beat Quigley at his
far post.
