David Freeman’s third goal in two games gave Monaghan a third win on the spin as they leapfrogged Limerick up to sixth place in the First Division table.

Freeman, who  hit a double in the 5-1 win at Mervue last time out, scored a well-taken only goal of the night on 12 minutes.

Midfielder Stephen McCrossan cushioned the ball to Freeman and the former Ireland underage international striker took the ball to the edge of the box before shooting past Brian Collopy.

Limerick almost levelled from the resumption, but Monaghan keeper Ronan McGann got a hand to Shane Treacy’s effort to touch the ball onto the angle of the crossbar and post.

Substitute David Ryan also came close to an equaliser ten minutes from time but McGann was off his line quickly to save at the striker’s feet.
