Dean Lawrence put through his own goal as bottom-of-the-table Kildare suffered a 12th successive defeat.

In truth, the result was harsh on County who had good chances either side of half-time.

Defender Lawrence directed a cross from Emeka Onwubiko past his own keeper Kevin McDonnell for what proved the only goal of the game on 12 minutes.

Athlone keeper John McGuinness then earned his side the points with two fine stops.

First, McGuinness turned a shot on the turn from Craig Purcell round a post on 44 minutes.

Two minutes into the second half McGuinness was there again to thwart Orrin Farrell.
