Shamrock Rovers 4 UCD 1
Monday, 23 August 2010 10:41

Shamrock Rovers brushed aside the challenge of UCD at Tallaght Stadium as the Hoops maintained their five point lead at the top of the Premier Division.

Michael O’Neill’s side recorded their second consecutive 4-1 victory, with goals from Stephen Bradley, Billy Dennehy, Gary Twigg and Dan Murray handing the Hoops victory.

In truth, the margin of victory could have been a lot more, especially after UCD were reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of Brian Shorthall for a rash challenge on Dennehy.

The match was only five minutes old when the home side took the lead. Bradley stole the ball off Greg Bolger and sent himself one-on-one with Ger Barron, finishing coolly from the edge of the box.

The hosts looked confident but the visitors drew level on 26 minutes when Ciaran Kilduff’s shot deflected off Aidan Price and flew past the wrong-footed Alan Mannus.

The Hoops regained their lead when Bradley, who was happily pulling the strings all evening, brilliantly set Billy Dennehy free down the left. The Ex-Cork City winger unleashed a cross-shot that flew into the top corner.

Any chance the visitors had of getting back into the game faded soon into the second half when Shorthall was shown a straight red card after a hard tackle on Dennehy.

The match was ended as a competition on 62 minutes when Twigg headed home Dennehy’s cross.

Rovers played the remainder of the match with real confidence and came close to extending their lead on several occasions.

Substitute Neale Fenn almost opened his Rovers account on 76 minutes but his header was pushed just wide.

However, from the resulting corner, Murray rose highest to head home and make it 4-1.
