Shamrock Rovers' search for a first home win in the new Airtricity League season goes on after drawing 0-0 with UCD at Tallaght Stadium.
Michael O'Neill's side struggled to create many chances or link play as their newly-promoted opponents out-played them periods of the game.
Thomas Stewart, making his debut for The Hoops, should have opened the scoring on 5 minutes when Billy Dennehy cut the ball back to him, but his effort flew high over the crossbar.
After that it was Martin Russell's young team who dominated play and looked the more threatening in front of goal. Their first attempt came from Graham Rusk, although his shot was off-target.
Then Ciaran Kilduff used his upper body strength to hold off his marker before letting rip with a shot that Alan Mannus did well to direct out for a corner kick.
The pressure continued to be heaped on the home side as Robbie Creevy tried his luck with a shot from distance and Greg Bolger pulled strings in midfield like a puppeteer.
Stewart again had a chance to score for the Hoops on 29 minutes, however this time he was denied by a superb save from UCD shot-stopper Billy Brennan.
After the interval, Rovers lifted the tempo and enjoyed more possession of the ball, yet they failed to convert that into clear chances on goal.
Craig Sives came close with a header, while James Chambers blasted over when he should have tested Brennan. Frustrated sighs could be heard right around the Tallaght Stadium.
UCD could have taken the lead when David McMillan was sent through by Bolger, but Mannus stood tall before pulling off an expert stop to deny the young attacker.
A point was fully merited by Russell's team, but for Rovers there is a lot of work to do before they travel across Dublin to face Sporting Fingal on Monday.
