Gary Sheahan scored twice to give Wexford Youths their biggest win of the season against ten-man Mervue.

Second bottom Mervue had the perfect start with Kevin Crehan bundling the ball home to give them a fifth minute lead.

But Youths were level on 22 minutes when Shane Dempsey’s free-kick deceived keeper Ger Hanley.

Youths then blew Mervue away with three goals in seven minutes before half-time.

Sheahan’s run and cross from the right set-up Danny Furlong to put Youths in front on 36 minutes.

Ben Ryan’s shot from the edge of the area beat Hanley to make it 3-1 three minutes later before Furlong’s assist gave Sheahan his first on 42 minutes.

Any revival hopes ended within ten minutes of the restart when Mervue midfielder Simon Walsh was sent off for a late tackle.

But Mervue got a goal back within five minutes as Crehan converted Dan Cunningham’s cross.

Sheahan sealed the win, though, saving the best until last with a stunning fifth goal for Youths on 70 minutes, skipping past three defenders before shooting beyond Hanley.
