Robbie Doyle scored and was sent off as Sporting Fingal resigned themselves to an away clash with Shelbourne in Tuesday’s promotion play-off.
Stephen Place volleyed Athlone in front on 19 minutes.
Conan Byrne’s 26th goal of the season, a header from a Dinny Corcoran cross, put FAI Ford Cup finalists Sporting level on the half hour mark.
But Athlone were back in front two minutes before the break when Robbie Benson punished a defensive error to tap home.
Des Hope put Athlone further ahead on 52 minutes when following up to score after Sporting keeper Chris Konopka spilled Mark Salmon’s free kick.
Doyle tapped home Sporting’s second goal on 71 minutes before getting sent off three minutes from time following an altercation with an assistant referee.
