| UCD book Fourth Round spot |
|
UCD came from behind to advance to the next round of the competition thanks to a goalkeeping calamity that handed them victory. Drogheda keeper Paul Skinner got it all wrong fourteen minutes from full time when he allowed David McMillan’s relative harmless cross into the net. Early on United almost gifted their opponents a goal when Michael Daly skewed his attempted clearance towards goal but Skinner got a fingertip to the ball turning it onto the post before gratefully gathering the rebound. At the other end  Billy Brennan knew little about John Flood’s header from a Joe Kendrick corner that bounced off him and out for a corner. Ciaran Kilduff lifted the ball over Skinner and the bar and Greg Bolger’s lob wasn’t far away as UCD went close to breaking the deadlock. However, United hit the front ten minutes from half-time with the simplest of goals as Michael Daly rose unopposed to meet Kendrick’s corner and head home. But the home side’s advantage lasted barely five minutes when Chris Mulhall all too easily cut in from the right before planting his shot to the bottom corner of the net. The opening twenty minutes of the second half saw both sides huff and puff with the only real chance of note falling to Drogheda as defender Evan McMillan was on hand to get a vital block on Gareth O’Connor’s goal bound strike. With 76 minutes gone Skinner erred and college were in the hat but in fairness to Drogheda they threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser however Billy Brennan stood firm as he made a string of fine saves from Flood, Kendrick and substitute Jamie Duffy. Drogheda: Skinner, Treacy, Kendrick, McNally, McGill E, McGill B, Flood, Osborne, O’Connor (Fitzpatrick 85), Daly, Brennan (Duffy 61). UCD: Brennan, Harding, Nangle, Boyle, McMillan D, Bolger, Ward (Creevy 82), Corry, Kilduff, Mulhall, McMillan E. Referee: D. Tomney (Dublin) |
