UCD 2-3 Bray Wanderers

Inspired by two brilliant second half goals from winger Jake Kelly, Bray Wanderers advanced to the FAI Ford Cup quarter-finals with a narrow victory over fellow Premier Division strugglers UCD in last night's one-sided fourth round tie at the Belfield Bowl.

It was a measure of revenge for basement club Bray who had been beaten by the Students in their three previous league meetings this season.

Even though striker Ciaran Kilduff had two late goals for a never say die College, Bray had done enough on the night to merit their place in the last eight of the competition.

College did have an early chance after a foul by central defender Derek Prendergast on winger Graham Rusk. From the resulting free kick, midfielder Greg Bolger was just over the top from 30 yards.

Bray went on front on ten minutes when a free by winger Kelly on the right was headed down by defender Sean Houson for Shane O'Neill to rifle home a shot from 15 yards giving 'keeper Ger Barron no chance. It was the striker's 13th goal of the season.

And the Seagulls went close to stretching their lead when O'Neill had another effort from ouside the box that struck the upright and just wide after Dean Zambra had created the opening.

Chris Mulhall did have an opening for the Students but shot over the top from 16 yards after striker Ciaran Kilduff had put the midfielder in the clear.

College had a real let-off on 27 minutes when Danny O'Connor played a clever through ball to O'Neill. But with the goal at his mercy, the striker could not get enough power into his finishing shot and Andy Boyle was back to clear off his line with Barron beaten.

Bray continued to threaten and were again unlucky two minutes before the interval when Dean Zambra had a diving header pushed just over by the excellent Barron after good build-up work between Dave Webster and Danny O'Connor.

The visitors eventually stretched their lead on 54 minutes when a precision ball over the top by Shane O'Connor allowed Kelly to race forward from the left and neatly lob the ball over the head of the advancing Barron into the unguarded net.

Bray's night of joy continued when Kelly had his second goal on 68 minutes. A long ball down the right by Gary Dempsey was played right across the face of goal by David Webster for Kelly to fire home an angled shot from 20 yards.

Kilduff then had those two late consolation goals for UCD. First the striker fired home on 83 minutes when he fired home from close range after a cross by Chris Mulhall. Then substitute Ward sent over a cross from the right which Kilduff volleyed home from eight yards. But it was too little, too late.

UCD: Barron; P.O'Conor, E.McMillan, Boyle, David O'Connor  (Shorthall 64); Wilson (Ward 64), Bolger, Creevy, Mulhall, Rusk ; Kilduff.

Bray Wanderers: Gregg; Webster, S.O'Connor, Prendergast , Houston; Zambra, Danny O'Connor, Shields, Dempsey, Kelly (Doyle 81); O'Neill.

UCD book Fourth Round spot

UCD came from behind to advance to the next round of the competition thanks to a goalkeeping calamity that handed them victory.  Drogheda keeper Paul Skinner got it all wrong fourteen minutes from full time when he allowed David McMillan’s relative harmless cross into the net.

Early on United almost gifted their opponents a goal when Michael Daly skewed his attempted clearance towards goal but Skinner got a fingertip to the ball turning it onto the post before gratefully gathering the rebound.

At the other end  Billy Brennan knew little about John Flood’s header from a  Joe Kendrick corner that bounced off him and out for a corner.

Ciaran Kilduff lifted the ball over Skinner and the bar and Greg Bolger’s lob wasn’t far away as UCD went close to breaking the deadlock.

However, United hit the front ten minutes from half-time with the simplest of goals as Michael Daly rose unopposed to meet Kendrick’s corner and head home.

But the home side’s advantage lasted barely five minutes when Chris Mulhall all too easily cut in from the right before planting his shot to the bottom corner of the net.

The opening twenty minutes of the second half saw both sides huff and puff with the only real chance of note falling to Drogheda as defender Evan McMillan was on hand to get a vital block on Gareth O’Connor’s goal bound strike.

With 76 minutes gone Skinner erred and college were in the hat but in fairness to Drogheda they threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser however Billy Brennan stood firm as he made a string of fine saves from Flood, Kendrick and substitute Jamie Duffy.

Drogheda:  Skinner, Treacy, Kendrick, McNally, McGill E, McGill B, Flood, Osborne, O’Connor (Fitzpatrick 85), Daly, Brennan (Duffy 61).  UCD:  Brennan, Harding, Nangle, Boyle, McMillan D, Bolger, Ward (Creevy 82), Corry, Kilduff, Mulhall, McMillan E.  Referee: D. Tomney (Dublin)

UCD win First Division title

UCD lifted the First Division title on Saturday evening at the UCD Bowl despite losing their final game of the season to Waterford United.

Waterford scored three times inside four minutes as they came from behind to beat the champions.

Students captain Ronan Finn carved out the lead goal on 21 minutes, playing Ciaran Kilduff in on goal to shoot past Kevin Burns.

But The Blues hit back in dramatic fashion on 59 minutes when Willie John Kiely headed home Paul Walsh’s cross.

Vinny Sullivan then put Blues in front within 40 seconds when his 30-yard shot deflected off Andy Boyle before entering the net off a post.

Sullivan was there again within two minutes to score from another Walsh cross.

David McMillan got UCD’s second goal two minutes into stoppage time.

UCD edge past Arklow

Two mistakes by stand-in goalkeeper Willie Doyle helped College through to the fourth round at the UCD Bowl.

A goalkeeping error initially gifted non-league Arklow the lead on 15 minutes when Darragh Murray tapped home after Ger Barron dropped Stephen Murphy's corner.

But Doyle, a striker playing between the posts due to a goalkeeping crisis at Town, gave UCD a soft equaliser on 32 minutes when allowing Timmy Purcell's long-range shot squirm under his body.

Doyle, a former UCD player, made another error to give UCD the lead three minutes before half-time when John Reilly's header from Purcell's cross fell through his hands.

Ciaran Kilduff rifled in the killer third goal on 69 minutes from Ronan Finn's cross.
