| Sligo Rovers through to EA SPORTS Cup final |
|
Two superb finishes by ex-Hoops man Padraig Amond dumped his former side out of the EA Sports Cup last night. The league’s top scorer took his tally to 23 in all competitions for Sligo Rovers this season, with a brace against Shamrock Rovers at the Showgrounds. Amond rattled home the equaliser just 30 seconds after the visitors had opened the scoring when keeper John Gibson caught Gary Twigg’s hopeful lob behind the line. And he produced the winner just four minutes after the restart, when he raced onto Eoin Doyle’s slick pass and smashed the ball past Alan Mannus at the near post. A brilliant first half produced a number of chances at both ends, though both goals came within less than a minute of each other. A long throw-in from Stephen Rice was only half-cleared by the Sligo defence on 16 minutes, and Twigg’s volley caught out Gibson. Sligo responded just as Amond created space before firing the ball low past Mannus. Amond then claimed the winner just four minutes into the second half, when he beat Mannus at the near post to secure Sligo’s passage to the decider. Sligo: Gibson, Keane, Peers, Foran, Davoren, Doyle, O’Grady (Ventre 72), Ryan, McCabe, Boco (Russell 90), Amond (Blinkhorn 83). Shamrock: Mannus, Flynn, Murray, Price, Stevens, Bayly (Kavanagh 60), Chambers (Bradley 68), Rice, Dennehy, Stewart, Twigg. Ref: N Doyle. |
