Galway aim to close gap on Candystripes
Thursday, 28 May 2009 09:07
Galway United could close the gap with Derry City to just one point when the Tribesmen face the Candystripes at Terryland Park tonight.

Ian Foster's side have started the new campaign magnificently and currently boast 18 points, leaving them fifth in the table. However, they will be hoping to close the gap with the teams ahead of them and, with Derry City on 22 points, a win tonight would see Galway place themselves firmly in the race for European football next season.

The club have declared this match to be 'Jersey Night' and have appealed to fans to wear their colours to the game.

Foster will be without Alan Murphy (ankle) and Sean Kelly (knee), while John Russell and Garry Breen are suspended. However, Niall Walsh, Paul Sinnott and Shane Fitzgerald all return from injury and could be in contention to return to the first team.

Derry City will give Thomas Stewart a late fitness test ahead of the game, while Gareth McGlynn returns to first team action.

Candystripes boss Stephen Kenny knows that this match will be a real test for his players as they attempt to move closer to the top of the table.

"We had a tough game at the Brandywell against Galway so we know what we are up against and they have good players in their side," he said. "As usual though we will go for the win. It's a big week for us with three games, two of which are away from home so we will need to be at our best. We travel in good spirits and hopefully we will get the result we require."
