Bray edge into semis after nervous win |
|
Bray Wanderers 2 Longford Town 1 Bray Wanderers edged nervously through to the FAI Ford Cup semi-finals when first half goals from John Flood and Chris Shields gave them a win in their quarter-final replay against Longford Town at the Carlisle Grounds.
It was only a series of superb second half saves by Aussie 'keeper Chris O'Connor that denied a battling Longford side from at least a chance of forcing the game into extra time.
Bray had their noses in front on 12 minutes when a long cross from the left by Derek Foran was knocked back across the face of the goal by Dave Mulcahy for striker Flood to fire home from six yards.
The Seagulls then stretched their lead on 26 minutes when winger Gary McCabe pushed back a perfect ball for midfielder Shields to rocket home a shot into the top right hand corner of the net from 25 yards.
Seconds before the interval Longford missed a glorious chance to reduce the deficit when Stephen Gough chipped a clever ball down the right to Tom King. But the winger's perfect cross was scooped over the bar from close range by striker Murphy when a goal looked on the cards.
Goalkeeper O'Connor then came to Bray's rescue on 52 minutes when blocking another Murphy effort at close range after a knock-down by Brian McCarthy following a Stephen Gough corner on the left.
O'Connor performed more heroics for the home side when getting down to block another Lynch effort after Jason McCartney had opened up the Bray defence on the left.
But there was nothing O'Connor could do about Longford's deserved consolation goal in the fourth minuute of added time Glynn headed home from ten yards after a McCartney cross from the left.
