It is an historic night at Terryland Park, as Mervue United make their First Division debut. The Galway side won promotion to the First Division after an impressive showing in the A Championship last season.
Mervue face Athlone Town in their opening match, and Town boss Brendan Place admits that it is a huge occasion for his club.
"Mervue will be up for the occasion, but it's also a celebratory occasion for our club," he says. "At one stage it looked as though there would be no League of Ireland football in Athlone but everybody rallied around the club."
