UCD out to reclaim top spot
UCD could reclaim top spot in the First Division when they face fourth-placed Sporting Fingal at the UCD Bowl tonight.

Martin Russell's side slipped to second after last week's scoreless draw with Limerick but a win or a draw tonight would see the Belfield club overtake Waterford United at the top of the table.

Fingal, whose title challenge suffered a set-back last week when they fell to a 4-1 defeat to Waterford, could move back with two points of top spot if they can win at the UCD Bowl.

The home side will be without Ciaran Nangle, who has a thigh strain, while Sean Harding and Greg Bolger remain sidelined.

“I still think there’s a long way to go," said manager Martin Russell. "Even a win won’t write Fingal off, but it’s important to keep trying to get the points in each and every game."

Fingal travel to Belfield without Shaun Maher (foot), Stephen Paisley (ankle), Gary O'Neill (groin) and Daniel Corcoran (hamstring), while Robbie Doyle (knee) and Philip Byrne (calf) face late fitness tests.

“We knew these back-to-back matches against the two leading sides were going to be tough and it’s important that we apply ourselves properly when we take on UCD,” said Fingal manager Liam Buckley.

“This is a competitive Division and we’re not going to win all the games. Losing to Waterford was disappointing but we move on and the attitude from the players in training this week has been excellent.

“Martin Russell has assembled a strong group of players at UCD who train full-time and are deservedly up around the top of the table. Our injury problems mean we’ll have to graft that bit harder to get a result but we’ll be going there in determined mood.”
