| Saints to continue Euro run |
|
St. Patrick's Athletic host Valletta in the Europa League at Richmond Park on Thursday night looking to continue their European form. ![]() The Saints enjoyed a tremendous run in Europe last season, knocking out JFK Olimps and Elfsborg before narrowly losing out to German giants Hertha Berlin. Jeff Kenna and his players will be hoping that form can continue when they take on Valletta of Malta on Thursday. "We have watched them twice and they’ve played the same team and the same system," said Kenna. "They have pace down the flanks and Jordi Cruyff in midfield seems to pull all the strings. The centre halves are competitive but they also like to play. Overall they are a pretty good footballing team. "It’s important to get that feeling going between the crowd and the players – the reaction to the first crunching tackle and it would be great to see the place rocking on the night." The Saints have strengthened their squad with the signing of striker Declan O'Brien from [pictured right] Dundalk. O'Brien is a proven goalscorer who won league, FAI Ford Cup and Setanta Sports Cup honours with Drogheda United before signing for Dundalk last winter. ![]() The 29-year-old joins the Inchicore outfit on loan until the end of the season and goes straight into the squad for the Valletta match. “I’m delighted with the chance to join St Pat’s and to work under Jeff Kenna," he said. "Pat’s have a very good squad of players but have been pretty unlucky with injuries. "They’ve struggled a bit in front of goal this season and hopefully I can play a part in addressing that. My focus will be on playing well for Pat’s and if I get a chance to play in the Europa League that would be an added bonus”.
St Patrick’s Athletic FC V Valletta kicks off at 7.45pm on Thursday and tickets are available from the club shop priced at €15 adult / €10 student / OAP and €5 child family. |
