| Lynch determined to defy critics |
Damian Lynch insists the St Patrick’s Athletic players are even more motivated about launching a title challenge after being written off by so many people.![]() The Super Saints finished runners-up in the Premier Division last term, although there have been a lot of changes at Richmond Park going into the new season with the bulk of last season’s squad gone along with manager John McDonnell. Jeff Kenna is now in charge and there are plenty of new faces at the club, but the hunger to win silverware is just as strong and the Dublin-based team are determined to improve on last year. Many pundits and experts have suggested that the Inchicore outfit will not be able to keep up with the pace that Bohemians, Derry City, Cork City, and Shamrock Rovers are expected to set. While Lynch admits that he also views those teams as the strongest sides in the league, he was quite irked to discover that St Pat’s were being competely ruled out as potential league winners. “It is easy for people on the outside to write us off and that is fine as they are entitled to their opinion,” Lynch told loi.ie. “We know that we are a good team and that we have the quality needed to be fighting at the top of the table. It won’t be easy as there are some really strong clubs this year, but we are strong too. “The players have been talking about people writing us off and I would be lying if we are not that extra bit motivated to prove them wrong. But we know what we can do this season. “It is going to be a long season with everyone playing each other four times at least. Some of the other teams have strengthened well, but I think we have a good balance in our squad. “St Pat’s want to be winning trophies and challenging for the league and that is exactly what we aim to be doing. We know it is up to us to work hard at it, although it would be nice to prove some people wrong.” |
