| Setanta semi-final at Richmond Park |
|
St. Patrick’s Athletic and Sligo Rovers meet at Richmond Park for the first leg of their Setanta Sports Cup semi-final. With neither side having reached the final of this competition before, the stakes are high ahead of Saturday’s second leg meeting at The Showgrounds. With adult ticket prices reduced to €10, a big crowd is expected at Richmond Park. For St. Pat’s, this is an opportunity to reach their first major domestic final since 2006, while Sligo Rovers will hope victory in the Setanta Sports Cup will help put to bed memories of last season’s FAI Ford Cup final defeat to Sporting Fingal. The Saints slumped to their first defeat of the Airtricity League campaign last Friday night, when a last minute strike condemned them to a 1-0 defeat to Drogheda United. Manager Pete Mahon has stressed the importance of reacting positively to that defeat. “I was bitterly disappointed with the manner of the defeat,” he said. “The sign of a good team is how they react to defeat and Tuesday night will be a big test for us, we just have to take it on the chin and move on. “It’s [the Setanta Sports Cup semi-final] over two legs and we can expect two tough games but we’re hoping that we can build some sort of platform on Tuesday night to bring with us to the Showgrounds –we don’t want to be going there in a deficit situation. “The last final Pat’s were in was a classic against Derry in wind-swept Landsdowne and it would be great to get into a final again. This is a whole new team and that would be a great achievement for them.” Brian Cash is unavailable as the midfielder is cup tied having featured for the Bit O` Red earlier in the campaign, while defender Ian Bermingham is nursing a hamstring strain and is likely to miss out. Unbeaten in league competition this season, Sligo Rovers travel to Inchicore full of confidence. The Bit O’Red will be without Iarflaith Davoren (hamstring), while there are also doubts over Richard Brush (knee) and Gary McCabe (ankle). |
