| Saints add four more |
St. Patrick's Athletic have confirmed four more signings, with Vinny Faherty, Alex Williams, Shane Guthrie and Paul Byrne all unveiled as Saints. ![]() Faherty, Williams and Byrne are all strikers, adding greatly to the Saints' attacking options for the 2010 season, while Shane Guthrie (pictured) is a highly rated defender who enjoyed spells with Galway United, Cork City, Shamrock Rovers and Cobh Ramblers. Glasgow-born Williams began his career as a 16 year old with Stirling Albion where he scored over twenty goals in his first full season as a professional. Williams went on to play for a number of Scottish clubs including Greenock Morton, Clyde and Ayr United and continued his impressive goal-scoring form. In 2009 he joined Dundalk and scored 7 goals in 15 appearances in the League of Ireland for the Louth club. “Pete Mahon called me, he outlined his plans for the club and I was interested from the start”, said Williams, “I felt I did well for Dundalk last year but I would like a full season to see what I can do and thankfully Pat’s have now given me that chance”. Being a Scottish striker will no doubt draw comparisons with last season’s top league goal-scorer Gary Twigg: “I know Gary well, he had a terrific season and it would be brilliant if I could make an impact like that”, said Williams,“I’ll just set out to do the best I can do, I’ll have my own goal targets in mind and hopefully I’ll start the season well and really hit the ground running”. Having played with Galway United in the Premier Division last season, Shane Guthrie a 25 year old central defender, has joined St Patrick’s Athletic for the coming league of Ireland season. Guthrie started his career playing in the Kerry District League with Tralee Dynamos and The Kingdom Boys, before signing with Cork City in 2003. At the beginning of a loan spell with Shamrock Rovers in 2006 Guthrie broke his leg and found him-self sidelined from the game for up to five months. The defender made his comeback with Cobh Ramblers before joining Galway at the start of last season and he has also played for Ireland at U-19 and U-23 level. “I knew John Gill from my time at Cork and also when he was involved with the U-23 squad so I was delighted to get a call from him and Pete about joining Pat’s”, said Guthrie. Last season Guthrie enjoyed a pretty good record with Galway United against St Pat’s winning the opening game of the season 3-0 at Richmond Park: “hopefully I can play a part in turning results like that around but really I’m just looking forward now to getting back to training, securing my place in the team and then helping Pat’s to win matches”. Vinnie Faherty also signs for the Saints from Galway United. The 22 year old Galway native was signed from Salthill Devon by Tony Cousins for Galway United in July 2007 and finished top scorer for the Tribesmen last season. “Derek O’Brien had always spoken well of his time here at the club so I was immediately interested” said Faherty. “I kept an eye on what John and Pete were doing, the squad that they’re building and I must say I’ve been impressed. Hopefully the competition for places will work in my favour and help improve my overall game. Last year I set a target for myself of 10 goals and I got 8 but I would hope to beat that this season with Pat’s”. Paul Byrne, a 23 year old striker with Bray Wanderers last season, is the latest player to sign for Pete Mahon and St Patrick’s Athletic. Mahon as former manager of UCD is no doubt very familiar with Byrne who played four seasons with the students before he went on to join Sporting Fingal and then Bray. Originally from Firhouse, Byrne started his career with local club Cherry Orchard and has also won a call-up to the Ireland U-19 squad. Byrne will be joining fellow ex-Bray players Derek Pender and Gareth Coughlan in the new look Pat’s squad. Looking ahead to the new season as a Saints’ player Byrne said “my aim is to break into the first team and then to challenge for every competition that Pat’s are in this season”. Saints fans won’t need reminding that Byrne scored the winner against Pat’s in the Carlisle Grounds last season, “but hopefully they won’t hold that against me” he added. |
