Sligo book last four spot
Sligo Rovers won round one of their two-round cup battle with Monaghan United thanks to a 3-0 win at The Showgrounds on Saturday evening.

Rovers booked their place in the semi-finals of the FAI Ford Cup with a deserved 3-0 defeat of the First Division leaders, though the sides will meet again at the same venue in the final of the EA Sports Cup next Saturday.

Alan Keane got Rovers’ first goal, after he converted from the spot for the second game running in the cup.

Having scored the winner against Finn Harps in the previous round, Keane made no mistake on 25 minutes, firing low to the corner after Conor McMahon handled in the area.

Monaghan were by no means overawed by their Premier Division opponents but they had a horror start to the second half.

Just 30 seconds in, defender Aidan Collins miscued his clearance, and Joseph Ndo intercepted to release Romuald Boco to fire home the second.

The home side sealed the win in injury-time, when local youngster Mark McGoldrick came off the bench to claim his first senior goal for the club.
