| Ventre sets sights on EA SPORTS Cup |
Danny Ventre says last season’s cup heartache will drive Sligo Rovers on as they host Shamrock Rovers in tonight’s EA SPORTS Cup semi-final (kick-off 7.45pm).![]() The Bit O’Red were defeated in last season’s FAI Ford Cup final by Sporting Fingal, ending the club’s hopes of silverware in 2009. However, the club are now just 90 minutes away from another cup final and Ventre believes the memories of last season will drive the players on. “We had a good chance to get silverware last season in the FAI Ford Cup but that didn’t work out for us, so this season the EA SPORTS Cup gives us a great opportunity to bring a trophy back to The Showgrounds,” he said. “I’ve been here three years and last season was the closest we’ve come to getting a trophy. Getting to a final spurs you on – once you get one you want to keep going and get to another final.” The Bit O’Red are one of the form teams in the Premier Division and have won their last four league matches, most recently defeating UCD 4-0. Indeed, having bagged 43 goals in the league campaign so far – 17 of them courtesy of the league top scorer Padraig Amond – Paul Cook’s side are the top scoring team in the division. However, Ventre says that it is only recently that the team is beginning to hit top form. “We weren’t getting the right results at the start of the season,” he said. “We were dominating matches but only getting draws. There were quite a few new signings and I think it took a bit of time for the players to gel, but we seem to have clicked now and we’re on a good run. We just have to keep that going – keep pushing up the league table and hopefully land a cup.” |
