Reds capture Leinster Senior Cup

First Division Shelbourne captured the Leinster Senior Cup for the 19th time with an emphatic and  fully deserved victory over Premier Division opponents Bray Wanderers in yesterday's one-sided final at the Carlisle Grounds.

It was a moment to savour for the big contingent of long-suffering Shels fans in the 1,500 crowd as skipper David McGill stepped forward to collect the trophy the Reds first won in 1900.

Shelbourne were the dominant team in the early stages when first Dinny Corcoran had a header just wide of the target after a cross from defender Ray Scully on the right.

Then David Cassidy had an effort well saved by Seagulls 'keeper Brian Kane. Twice Corcoran wasted further chances when well placed before a Paul Shiels effort was saved by the alert Kane.

Daire Doyle twice went close for Bray midway through the first half. His first effort was blocked by 'keeper Dean Delaney and then the winger was just off target with a long range effort.

Shelbourne grabbed the lead on 41 minutes when a Brian Farrell cross from the right was fired home by Corcoran from ten yards giving Kane no chance. It was the striker's ninth goal of the season.

The Reds then stretched their lead on 57 minutes when man of the match Scully beat two defenders on the right and then produced the perfect ball for Cassidy to run through the home defence and lob 'keeper Kane from 22 yards with a perfect finish.

Defender Sean Byrne was narrowly wide with a 35 yard effort from the left as Shelbourne took control of the game in the second half. Then only a brilliant late saving tackle by Shane O'Connor prevented another Shels goal after Cassidy had put Corcoran through the middle.         Mark Hughes made victory certain for the visitors on 73 minutes when he ran on to a pass from Cassidy and slotted the ball past Kane from close range.

The agony continued for Bray with substitute Mark Leech grabbing a fourth goal for the Reds on 82 minutes when heading home from ten yards after clever approach work by Scully and McGill.
