Twigg hoping to pen new Hoops deal
In-form striker Gary Twigg is in talks with Shamrock Rovers about extending his deal with the Dublin club.

Having followed manager Michael O’Neill over from Brechin City in Scotland, the 25-year-old has had an instant impact since arriving in the League of Ireland.

He scored the first ever goal at the Tallaght Stadium, bagged a brace against Rovers’ fierce rivals Bohemians, picked up the SWAI Player of the Month award for April, and has scored 15 goals in 18 league games so far.

Due to his superb scoring tally, the former Derby County frontman has become a firm favourite with the Hoops supporters and is now ready to commit his long-term future to the club.

“I’m very settled here and have been enjoying my time with the club, so I’m talking to the club about a new contract,” Twigg told loi.ie.

“Things have gone well so far, but I’ve been lucky to have so many excellent players around me and setting up chances for me.

“The standard of play in the league is very good. I think I’m playing with better players here and that always makes my job easier.

“I’m not looking to move on, so that is why I’m talking to the club about a new contract as I want to stay here for a long time and help the club to be successful.”

Rovers boss O’Neill always felt that Twigg would do well in the Premier Division and he is as eager as anyone to tie the striker down to a new deal.

“People here didn’t know what they were getting, but I knew what I was getting,” said O’Neill.

“He’s in the process now of signing an extended long-term contract with the club. He’s already on a long-term contact and we’ve agreed on another longer term contract.

“He’s very happy here. He’s loving his football and his relationship with the club.”
