| Rovers ready for historic cup fixture |
|
History will be made on Saturday when the Tallaght Stadium hosts its first ever FAI Ford Cup fixture when Shamrock Rovers host Drogheda United. Tickets for the match are expected to sell-out and Rovers has urged supporters not to leave it too late to purchase tickets, which are on sale from the stadium 1-6pm daily. ![]() Hoops boss Michael O'Neill is looking forward to his first FAI Ford Cup match as he aims to take Rovers far in the competition. “It’s a cup game, so anything can happen," he said. "We know what Drogheda are capable of after playing them twice already, home and away, with both games ending up draws. “They’re at the stage where they’re moulding much better, which is understandable given they had pretty much no pre-season. We expect a very difficult tie against them. “It’s another momentous occasion for Shamrock Rovers as it’s the club’s first FAI Ford Cup tie in Tallaght Stadium. For the supporters it’s bridging a gap of 22 years. “Hopefully that will mean a very good atmosphere and that will help the players to put on a performance and get the right result. We’re certainly looking forward to it. “Shamrock Rovers have a fantastic overall record in this competition and hopefully this game will mark the beginning of the current side contributing to that history.” Sean Webb looks to be the Hoops' only absentee as he continues to be sidelined with a back injury. Having secured a draw against Cork City in the league last week, Rovers fan be confident going into the fixture. “I thought Cork City were excellent and was very happy that we came away from Turner’s Cross with a point," said O'Neill. "It shows that we can dig out results when required. “Once again we’ve proved that we can compete with anyone in the Premier Division. We’re also improving on our first round results - we’re certainly making progress.” |
