| Baker hails strike partner Twigg |
|
Dessie Baker believes his strike partner Gary Twigg can go on to become of the all-time great League of Ireland strikers. Twigg is currently the top scorer in the Premier Division, having bagged eight goals in his opening nine matches. The Scottish striker has formed a brilliant partnership with Baker, who compares his new partner to some of the true greats of the Irish game. "He's a quality finisher," said Baker after seeing Twigg score a brace against St. Patrick's Athletic on Saturday night. "He's up there with the likes of Stephen Geoghegan and Pat Morley whom I've played with over the years. He's also a bit like Dave Mooney at Longford. Dave scored a lot of gaols from our partnership there. We seem to have clicked. "The first two games of the season we only started getting together, but the last three or four weeks it's been great. I know where he's going and he knows where I'm going." Rovers have started the season brightly and are now in fourth place in the Premier Division table. An obvious factor helping the Hoops is the fact that Baker seems to have discovered a new lease of life this season. Sent on loan to the First Division by ex-Rovers boss Pat Scully, Baker appeared to have fallen well down the pecking order at the Hoops. However, new boss Michael O'Neill has put faith in the ex-Shels forward and that has paid off. "Michael brought me back in and told me I'm a big part of the club," says Baker. "He seems to like what I have to offer. To be fair to him, he knows what to do to get the best out of me. I'm getting the rewards of that and so is he and Rovers. I feel great at the moment. Things are going great and the team is winning games."
