Bermingham to start for Ireland Under-21s
Shamrock Rovers defender Ian Bermingham will start for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s against Turkey on Tuesday night.

The Hoops left back was drafted into the squad after Seamus Coleman, formerly of Sligo Rovers but currently with Everton, and Sunderland's Michael Liddle were both forced out with injuries.

Bermingham was today named in the starting XI, alongside Galway United captain Jay O'Shea, who scored the first goal for Ireland in their magnificent 2-1 win over Spain at the RSC last Friday.

Manager Don Givens has named a similar team to that which defeated Spain, with the inclusion of Bermingham being the only change in personne. Shane Redmond starts in goal, with Brendan Moloney playing right back and Eddie Nolan, Darren Dennehy and Ian Bermingham making up the rest of the backline.

The midfield trio will once again consist of David Meyler, Owen Garvan and Stephen Gleeson, with Friday night’s goal heroes Alan Judge and Jay O’Shea starting out wide. Motherwell striker Cillian Sheridan will lead the line in attack.

Givens said that the team will go into the fixture full of confidence:

“Turkey will be a technically very good team. They will be similar to Spain, but we showed last Friday that we can more than match teams of that caliber. We are unbeaten in four matches – defeating Spain and Lithuania, and recording draws against Portugal and Germany – so we are hoping to keep that run going. This is a great group of players to work with and they are getting better by the game. If we perform at Turner’s Cross on Tuesday in the same manner in which we performed against Spain last Friday, we can be confident of getting a good result.”

Alan Judge, who scored what turned out to be the winning goal against the Spanish, will be hoping to add to his goal tally on Tuesday night:

“I was delighted to get the goal. It was my first goal for the Under-21 team and it was a great feeling. Cillian [Sheridan] did really well to cross it and it felt as though it took forever to get to me, but I struck it well and I was delighted to see it hit the back of the net. Results like that show what a good squad of players we have. We can take teams on, we’re very disciplined in our approach, and we work very hard for each other.”

Tickets for the match will be on sale at Turner’s Cross prior to kick-off, and are priced €15 for adults and €5 for Under-16s.
