Robinson: Hoops will be number 1

Shamrock Rovers captain Shane Robinson will lead the Hoops into Tallaght next week, but tonight he wants to ensure that the Hoops get 2009 off to a winning start when they travel to the Carlisle Grounds to take on Bray Wanderers.

Rovers have lost their last three visits to Bray but will be desperate to end that run of form under new manager Michael O'Neill. Considering that it is ten years since these sides played a scoreless draw, the history books point to goals this evening.

Bray Wanderers have no injury concerns ahead of the match, with Eddie Gormley set to field his strongest XI.

Shamrock Rovers will give debuts to new signings Sean Webb, Ian Bermingham, Shane Robinson, Stephen Bradley, Ollie Cahill and Gary Twigg. Greg Cameron and Darragh Maguire are the only absentees for the Hoops as they look to kick-start their season ahead of next week’s opening of the Tallaght Stadium.

Robinson is looking forward to the opening of the new stadium, where, as club captain, he will have the honour of leading the troops onto the field of play for the very first time.

"Anyone that's a Rovers person is looking forward to it," he said. "It's long overdue and will be a real pleasure to play there. I just want to say well done to the board, committee and supporters. I know the 400 Club sweated blood at times to keep it going as this club could easily have gone under.

"It's vital to push on because we're in a good position. If we can get attendances for the next year or two, we could get the club back to being the biggest in Ireland."
