Mons book EA SPORTS Cup final spot
Monaghan United will compete in a national final for the first time in the club's history after a dramatic EA SPORTS Cup semi final win over Dundalk at Gortakeegan.

Cathal O'Connor struck the only goal of the game with just four minutes left on the clock to send the First Division side into the EA SPORTS Cup final, where they will meet Sligo Rovers.

The home side piled on the pressure in the opening minutes, forcing several early corners. However, the visiting defence could cope with everything that was thrown at them.

In a lively opening half, Dundalk also pushed men forward in search of the opening goal. The best opportunity for the Lilywhites came five minutes before the break when Hatswell's corner kick sailed through the penalty area without anybody getting a touch.

United's Alan Byrne almost opened the scoring five minutes after the re-start but his header went wide.

Sean Brennan was next to make the visitors sweat when his free kick came crashing off the crossbar on 65 minutes.

With extra time looming, the breakthrough finally came with just four minutes remaining. Cathal O'Connor's rasping shot was too much for Cherie and it hit the back of the net to send Monaghan United into their first ever national final.
