McCaffrey continues to build his squad

DUNDALK FC boss Sean McCaffrey added four new signings to his Lilywhites squad over the weekend.

Chris Shields and Shane O'Neill were snapped up from Bray Wanderers while Gary Shanahan moved to Oriel Park from Limerick while defender Nathan Murphy signed a new deal with the Premier Division side.

Former Republic of Ireland youths international team manager McCaffrey had already signed up Mark Griffin and Stephen McDonnell.

Shields, who celebrated his 21st birthday just before the turn of the year, was with Saint Francis before joining Bray in 2008.

He was a regular at the Carlisle Grounds over the past three seasons, and last year was part of a squad that enjoyed a fine campaign, finishing sixth in the Premier Division.

Shields was the Bray Supporters’ Club Young Player of the Year for 2010, after an incredible ending which saw him convert the winning spot-kick to preserve their Premier Division status, at the expense of Monaghan United.

Teammate O’Neill follows Shields to the Louth club.

The forward, who turns 23 on Monday, also made his debut during the 2008 season, after previously spending time at Saint Joseph’s Boys and Cherry Orchard.

O’Neill was the club’s A-Championship Player of the Year in 2009 and, 12 months later, was the Junior Supporters’ Club Player of the Year.

He was also the Supporters’ Club Player of the Month for three months running in 2010, a period in which he scored a hat-trick in the Seagulls’ Leinster Senior Cup semi-final win over UCD.

Later that year, in September, he scored against Dundalk in a 2-0 home win for Bray.
