2009 to open with Clash of the Champions

The Clash of the Champions will officially kick-off the 2009 season when Premier Division title holders Bohemians make the trip to Oriel Park to face First Division champions Dundalk (kick-off 7.35pm).

For Lilywhites manager Sean Connor, tonight presents the opportunity to put one over his former club. Connor managed the Gypsies in 2007 and he is relishing the opportunity to face his old club.

"Every day I live in Dundalk I realise more how big the club is," he said. "They are the best fans I have ever encountered. I want the Dundalk fans to show that tonight."

New Lilywhites striker Darren Mansaram looks set to miss the opportunity to face his former club as a groin strain will keep him sidelined for a week. Otherwise, Dundalk are at full strength, with the likes of Declan O’Brien, George O’Callaghan and Michael Collins set to receive their competitive debuts for Dundalk.

Dundalk will be captained by former Bohs player Thomas Heary (pictured right with Bohs captain Owen Heary).

Bohemians are missing four players for the trip to Louth – Conor Powell, Sean Byrne, Ken Oman and Jason Byrne are all ruled out of the first match of the season, while Mark Rossiter is rated as doubtful.

Oman’s absence will see Owen Heary move to centre-half, with new signing Brian Shelley occupying the right-back position. New signings Joseph Ndo and Paul Keegan are in line to make their debuts for the Champions.

Kick-off at Oriel Park is at the earlier time of 7.35pm in order to facilitate live television coverage on RTE TWO. Supporters are advised to arrive at the ground early as a large crowd is expected.
