Drogs hoping Cup win can kick-start campaign
Thursday, 16 April 2009 11:15
Drogheda United are hoping their EA SPORTS Cup victory over Bray Wanderers can kick-start their season and help them to victory over St. Patrick's Athletic on Friday (Richmond Park, 7.45pm).

The Drogs recorded their first win of the season at the Carlisle Grounds to booked their place in the EA SPORTS Cup Second Round. Manager Alan Mathews is hoping that the victory will help the team record the league victory that he says their performances have deserved.

“Nobody can fault our performances this season as the players have played really well and haven’t been getting the results they deserved," he said. "I’m delighted that we finally won our first match in our EA SPORTS Cup game against Bray Wanderers on Monday. Finally our performance matched the result.

"I was delighted for the players especially. We have to build on that result now on Friday night against a strong St Pats team, and as in any match in this league we’re going to have to play really well if we want to get anything out of the game. Hopefully we can build on Monday’s victory and get the right result in Inchicore.

The Drogs' last league outing ended in a 1-0 defeat to Galway United, despite having dominated the match.

"We dominated the game from the beginning of the match to the end, but came away with nothing to show for our efforts once again," reflected Mathews.

“Both John Paul Kelly and Robbie Farrell, two of our attacking players were selected to play, but unfortunately got injured in the warm-up to the game. Our small squad was already short due to injuries, so losing the two lads was a blow. We had to play two makeshift strikers up front in Jamie Duffy and Paul Crowley, and they did very well to their credit."
