Drogheda United boss Alan Mathews believes the team are getting close to recording their first win of the new season. The Drogs have played well in their first five fixtures and have been somewhat unlucky to have taken just two points, with draws against Shamrock Rovers and Bray wanderers getting points on the board for the team. However, Mathews will be hoping that another good performance tonight at home to Galway United can see the Boynesiders record the win they need to kick-start their season. “We know ourselves that we need to work very hard for the full 90 minutes of the match," he said of the Galway game. "We have to focus on our own play, and take the game to Galway, as we did against Cork and Shamrock Rovers in our last two games. “Losing Shane Barrett early in the game against Cork was a massive blow for us. We knew with his pace and skill that he could cause Cork serious problems, as he showed against Shamrock Rovers last Friday. We’ll access the injury, but at this moment we don’t know how serious the injury is. Also, Alan McNally broke down previous to the Cork game and is a slight doubt for the Galway game on Friday night." Despite going down 1-0 to Cork City, Mathews was happy with his side's performance. “Cork came out and started the game well, which we knew they would," he said. "They played with a good tempo and shape, but they never really troubled us. They did have a large amount of the possession, but we weathered the storm quite comfortably. Their goal came about as a result of us giving away needless possession, and as a result they didn’t have to work particularly hard for their goal, which was the most disappointing aspect about the team’s performance. “I was happy with the immediate response of the players to the goal as we went up the other end and very nearly replied instantaneously, with Robbie Farrell forcing a corner from Dan Connor. “We started the second-half at a great tempo and John Paul Kelly brought out a great save from Dan Connor early on. I’m disappointed we didn’t score to at least get the draw, as Cork had no real fluency to their play, and we matched them for the majority of the game." |
