Drogs out to end goal drought
Thursday, 02 April 2009 10:30
Alan Mathews wants his Drogheda United side to end their goal drought when they take on Shamrock Rovers at United Park this Friday night.

The Drogs go into the match without having scored a goal in their opening four League of Ireland fixtures, something that Mathews says has to change quickly.

“We have to look at getting points on the board quickly," he said. "The reality is that we’re not scoring goals, and we haven’t got an array of strikers to pick from. But I’m confident that that first goal, and first win will come. We’re only going to get fitter and better, so it’s encouraging. We have to turn the performances into results, it’s as simple as that."

The Drogs were defeated by champions Bohemians last Friday, despite having played well.

“I don’t dwell too much on a performance if we haven’t achieved the right result," said Mathews. "I don’t do moral victories as a manager. We gave away a soft goal against Bohemians, and didn’t take the opportunities that feel our way. Some aspects of our play were good, and the attitude and work-rate of the players has been excellent since we got together.

“Our approach play was good on Friday night, as it has been all season, but we need to take the chances that fall our way. Bohemians had one good chance, and they scored from it, which is something we have to do ourselves.

“I felt we were on the front foot in the second half, and responded well to going the goal down. I saw Bohemians play at United Park last season and they won the game much easier than they beat us on Friday night. We maximised the possession and worked hard."
