Drogheda buoyed by response to shares launch
Friday, 28 January 2011 11:07

DROGHEDA UNITED have expressed their satisfaction at the response to the official launch of Drogheda United The Future Starts Here share initiative last night.

A statement released by the club said:

"The supporters group behind the takeover of the club are buoyed up by the goodwill and support they received. By the end of the night, pledges for shares, priced at €1000 each, had reached a total of 75. Further commitments were given by people who were unable to attend the event and these will be followed up over the coming days.

Speaking at the launch, FAI Chief Executive John Delaney empathised with the club's current plight: "While the trauma of losing games is bad enough, the trauma of potentially losing your club is one that is particularly hard for any supporter to endure.

"Speaking as a football supporter with a deep appreciation of the importance of football in the local community, Delaney pledged to personally buy five shares to help in the fight to secure Drogheda United's future."

He then took the opportunity to dispel any doubts regarding the future of Drogheda's home ground, Hunky Dorys Park. He confirmed that the club would continue to play there until such time as it chose to move to an alternative stadium, adding that then and only then could the Windmill Road ground be sold with all proceeds being put into a new home for the club."
