Candystripes hoping to catch Sofia cold

Derry City take on CSKA Sofia tonight, hoping to secure a good result to bring back to the Brandywell next week.

The Candystripes take on the Bulgarian giants at 6pm Irish time. Gareth McGlynn is the only injury concern for the League of Ireland team but the midfielder will face a fitness test on a hip injury before a final decision is made on his availability.

Manager Stephen Kenny has told his players that they must believe in their ability to knock the Bulgarians out of the Europa League.

"It's a little bit of a step into the unknown for us, we don't really know what to expect when facing a team playing their first competitive game of the season," said Kenny.

"So we can't say with any great certainty how we will react. The players know they must believe in themselves and believe they've got a chance over the two legs."

Club captain Peter Hutton says that the Candystripes travel to Bulgaria as underdogs, but he is hoping that they can pull off a shock.

"They're strong favourites," said Hutton. "They are at home and the onus is on them.

"But we hope we can catch them cold and keep the tie alive. The heat will be a major factor but we've done our homework on them."
