Kenny calls for attack
Derry City manager Stephen Kenny will be urging his side unto another victory over fellow title challengers Cork City when the clubs clash at Turners Cross (kick-off, 7-45pm).

Buoyed-up by that sparkling performance against defending champions Bohemians in that exhilarating 3-2 victory at Brandywell Stadium, Kenny wants his team to build on the successes of Drogheda United and Bohs and beat the men from the Lee for a second time this term.

“We’ve beaten Cork City already so going to Turners Cross holds no fears for us," he said. "We may have left it late but we fully deserved to win that match.

“There’s always a good atmosphere at Turners Cross. It’s a proper football ground with a nice surface to play on and that will suit our style of play. We’ll not sit back against Cork.

“They have had a good run of late and are two points ahead of us so they’ll be feeling confident and in fairness to Cork, I think they are a good side, so we must put in a very good performance to get the better of them again.”

Despite the fact that striker Sammy Morrow is not finding the net, the boss-man is happy with Morrow’s contribution to the side.

“People are waiting patiently for Sammy to score but he’s leading the line well and has set up goal-scoring chances for players around him. He’s a player of tremendous ability and an asset to the team.”

In season’s gone by,  Mark Farren has scored the bulk of Derry goals but this term the midfielders are weighing in with their contributions too, surely that fact must be pleasing to the manager?

“Mark Farren has certainly played his part in the goal-scoring stakes and he has hit four in his last two games, which is great. It’s also terrific to see midfielders weighing in with a number of goals too. Tommy Stewart has scored five, Ciaran Martyn four, Gareth McGlynn two and last Friday against Bohs Barry Molloy scored against Bohs in that 3-2 victory.”

While Derry’s form on home soil has been patchy to say the least, they are unbeaten on the road, and that’s a record Kenny wants to protect.

“Yeah, we’ve have good wins against Shamrock Rovers, St. Pat’s and Drogheda and it would be good for team morale if we managed to remain unbeaten away from home.“We want to get as many wins as possible. That’s our sole aim. A run of victories would be nice and keep us in contention. We’re working hard towards that particular end but no game is easy in this league.

“Cork have signed eight new players and they seem to have gelled together very quickly as their recent good run has shown. I expect a tight game. They will want to reverse that Brandywell defeat and we’ll be going for a double over them.”
