Derry City were elected to the League of Ireland in 1985 and joined five other newly-elected clubs in the First Division. After finishing 4th in their debut season, the northern club won the First Division in 1986-87 and have been in the top flight ever since.
The club was founded in 1928 and played their football in the Irish League (the league of Northern Ireland) between 1929 and 1972. However, the club withdrew from that league and played junior football for 13 seasons before being elected to the League of Ireland.
The club has a fine record of success in the League of Ireland, winning 12 major trophies in their first 20 years in the league. Three of these trophies were won during the 1988-89 season, when the club won a remarkable treble.
