Kelly named Airtricity / SWAI Player of the Month
Bray Wanderers striker Jake Kelly is the Airtricity/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland Player of the Month for September. The award was presented to the Seagulls’ striker this morning (Wednesday 20th October) by Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of Airtricity, at the Carlisle Grounds in Bray, Co. Wicklow.

It was a crucial four-nil win over Galway United on Friday, September 22nd which sparked Bray’s season to life.

Kelly became the first Bray Wanderers player to score 10 league goals in five years as they moved level on points with Drogheda in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

Kelly converted a first half penalty at the Carlisle Grounds to end Galway's recent five-match unbeaten run. He supplied the ammunition on a memorable night which saw Gary Shaw and Dean Zambra score before Kelly sealed things six minutes from the end. Following on from an earlier success over Dundalk, the Galway victory was the first time that the Wicklow club had won back-to-back league games since November 2008.

As well as his brace against Galway, Kelly also scored twice in the draw away to Sporting Fingal.

Now clear of automatic relegation to the First Division and closer to a play-off against Galway, Kelly is optimistic.

“The Galway win was huge of course, but for me the result against Sporting Fingal was equally important as it lifted us off the foot of the table”, said Kelly.

“At one stage we were written off, many people felt we were dead certs for the drop from the outset, but in these last few weeks we’ve proved a few people wrong.

“There’s a nice mix of youth and experience at the club – while a lot of young players have been given a chance, the experience of others has been a big help too.

“I’ve learned a lot from playing alongside the likes of Gary Dempsey and Danny O’Connor, and hopefully we’ll finish out the season strongly”, concluded 20-year-old Kelly who has 12 domestic goals to his name.

Presenting the award Airtricity Managing Director Stephen Wheeler commented: “I would like to congratulate Jake Kelly on being named the latest monthly winner of the Airtricity/Soccer Writers' Association Player of the Month awards. The run-in to the close of the 2010 Airtricity League is one of the most exciting yet with a nail-biting finish for the title as well as an exhilarating battle for vital Premier Division play-off places. Jake Kelly’s impressive contribution towards Bray Wanderers strong finish to this year’s season makes him a deserved winner of the Airtricity/SWAI Player of the Month title.”
